SEAL IN THE POWER

 

    THERE ARE A LOT OF THINGS THAT CAN BE DONE TO MAKE AN ENGINE PERFORM BETTER. RAISING THE COMPRESSION IS DEFINITELY ONE. MOST WILL THINK OF HIGH COMPRESSION PISTONS. THE BEST PISTON IN THE WORLD CAN NOT DO ITS JOB WITHOUT A GOOD SET OF RINGS. EVEN IN A STOCK ENGINE IF YOU GET BLOW BY THE RINGS YOU LOSE POWER, BURN OIL ETC. 

  YOU CAN CHANGE THE CAM, FLOW THE HEADS, CHANGE PISTONS, COMPRESSION RATIOS ETC. BUT IF THE EXPLOSION AT THE TOP OF THE COMPRESSION STROKE DOESN'T PUSH THE PISTON DOWN WITHOUT LOOSING IT PAST THE RINGS YOU ARE LOOSING COMPRESSION AND POWER.

   THERE ARE NUMEROUS TYPES OF PISTON RINGS AND MANY GOOD COMPANIES MAKING THEM .THE MOST COMMON RING USED TODAY IS GREY CAST IRON, OTHERS ARE ALLOY CAST IRON, DUCTILE IRON AND MALLEABLE IRON.

   A LOT GOES INTO DETERMINING WHAT TYPE OF RING IS BEST FOR YOU IN A LOT OF CASES COST IS A BIG FACTOR, OTHERS ARE HOW QUICK WILL THEY SEAT, HOW LONG WILL THEY LAST? HOW WILL THEY PERFORM UNDER VARIOUS CONDITIONS?

   YOU BY NOW SHOULD HAVE NOTICED THAT THERE IS NO CHROME MOLY RING LISTED. THE REASON IS THERE IS NO SUCH THING. ITíS ONE OR THE OTHER. EITHER ITS CHROME OR ITíS MOLY.

   AS I SAID THE MOST COMMON RING IS THE GREY CAST THESE ARE GOOD ALL AROUND RINGS. THEY DONíT LIKE HIGH HEAT OR DIRT AND DEFINITELY NOT TO BE USED WITH OUT A GOOD AIR CLEANER. CHROME RINGS ARE JUST WHAT THEY IMPLY. THEY ARE USUALLY STAINLESS, DUCTILE OR CAST WITH A CHROME PLATED FACE. THERE ARE SOME PROBLEMS IN GETTING THEM SEATED, BUT THEY USUALLY HAVE A GOOD LIFE SPAN AND HANDLE HEAT FAIRLY WELL. THE MOLY RING IS EITHER SPRAYED USING SOMETHING CALLED A FLAME SPRAY PROCESS THE OTHER IS PLASMA ARC WHICH IS PERMANENTLY BONDED WITH THE RING MATERIAL.

   THERE ARE MANY GOOD BRANDS OF PISTON RINGS ON THE MARKET AND THERE WILL ALWAYS BE DISCUSSION ON WHAT IS THE BEST. BUT ONE THING FOR SURE YOU WILL ALWAYS FIND TOTAL SEAL RINGS RIGHT AT THE TOP OF THE LIST .THEY CLAIM LOW BLOW BY ,INCREASED HORSEPOWER IMPROVED FUEL ECONOMY, COOLER AND CLEANER OIL, AND LONGER ENGINE LIFE.
